Rare double eagle brings high price in Stack's auction.
2/13/2006

The top price, $322,000, was paid for a 1907 Saint-Gaudens, Roman Numeral, High Relief, Partial Wire Rim, Plain Edge gold $20 double eagle, in a Stack's auction of more than 3,800 lots of U.S. and Colonial coins, medals and paper money in three evening sessions Jan. 16, 17 and 18 in New York City. The sessions followed Stack's 13th auction from the John J. Ford Jr. Collection (Coin World, Feb. 6 issue).

The double eagle is cataloged as Judd 1914 in United States Pattern Coins, Experimental and Trial Pieces, by J. Hewitt Judd, edited by Q. David Bowers.

The price includes the 15 percent buyer's fee, as do other prices reported here.

Bidding opened with the Paul West Collection of Charleston and Charleston Neck, S.C., slave hire badges, 1800 to 1864, consisting of 63 lots. The top price, $17,250, was paid for an 1807 carpenter's badge, one of just four badges known for this occupation and the earliest carpenter's badge known.
